The LRG Abroad
Rose Cranston - USA
In the fall of 2023 I got the opportunity to work at the Organic and Carbon Electronics Laboratories (ORaCEL) at North Carolina State University located in Raleigh USA. ORaCEL is a multi-disciplinary research center focusing on the development of organic-based technologies including lighting and displays, computing, renewable power sources, and energy storage. While I was there, my research focused on the use of a scalable printing technique for the deposition of organic small molecule semiconductors and evaluated how this new method of thin-film fabrication effects the structure, properties, and charge transport characteristics of organic polycrystalline thin-films. Conducting research internationally has been a great experience and has given me the chance to meet and learn from other experts in this field.
Kaitlin Wagner - Norway
For three months, I worked with a great team at Zimmer&Peacock in Horten, Norway; a company which focuses on electrochemical device design, fabrication, and implementation across many relevant industries. My project centered around materials engineering and integration for glucose sensing flexible electrodes, as well as high throughput screen-printing optimization. Having the opportunity to do an industry-focused internship during my Ph.D. gave me valuable insight into the priorities of the academic versus international industrial markets, and better understanding of the importance of quality control and scale-up factors when designing experiments at the lab-scale. The chance to work internationally helped to grow my outlook towards engineering, and how our skills can be useful to a vast number of industries. Working out of Norway was a wonderful experience, and I’m happy to have been able to travel to new places (within Norway, Italy, Sweden, Demark and France) and make incredible memories with new friends throughout my time there.
I encourage those not only who are interested in industry but those looking for international experience to pursue an internship, whether it be for the LRG or with the LRG!
Ben King - France
In the winter of 2023, I spent three months at the University of Burgundy in Dijon, France, under the supervision of Professor Marcel Bouvet where I developed gas sensor technology incorporating silicon phthalocyanines synthesized by our group. I acquired experience in gas sensor characterization and made electronics based on an unfamiliar architecture while learning how to use (and modify) a sensor testing work bench and learn how to use a different evaporation system from the one we have in Ottawa. I had a great experience on this exchange and was able to meet and work with some amazing colleagues while living in a charming part of France known for their mustard, wine and regional cheese (comté). I was also able to use a few weekends to explore Lille, Vimy, Freiburg and Geneva. The local Ultimate frisbee club, Les Discjonctés, welcomed me with open arms and made my experience away from home even more comfortable. I would highly recommend a similar exchange for learning new techniques, new systems, and different ways of approaching academic research.
